INTRODUCTION
Alright team—let’s talk kit.
Because if you’re training for your first marathon (especially for a charity—go you!), one of the most overlooked parts of your journey is what you wear on the start line… and all the way to the finish. Choosing the best marathon running kit doesn’t need to cost the earth, but it does need to work for you.
I’ve coached hundreds of first-time marathoners, and I can tell you this: the wrong kit can make even the best training plan feel like a battle. The good news? Getting it right is easier than you think.
Let’s break it down.
THE BEST MARATHON RUNNING KIT: SHOES
If you’re going to invest in any part of your kit, make it your shoes. You’re about to spend a lot of time on your feet—training, racing, and recovering—so finding the right pair is absolutely key.
Now, I get it—there are so many shoe options out there. But here’s the deal: the best marathon running kit always starts with what fits your foot, not what’s trending on Instagram.
Head to a proper running shop and try on a few different pairs. You might love the sound of a certain brand, but your foot might say otherwise. We all have different shapes, arches, and needs, so don’t be afraid to experiment.
Oh, and if your knees or ankles are starting to feel a bit dodgy mid-training? Flip your shoes over and check the tread. If it’s worn down—or your shoes have clocked over 500 miles—it might be time for a new pair.
💡 Pro tip: Break in new shoes gradually. Rotate them with your current pair for a week or two, so your body can adjust. If you can stretch the budget, having two pairs on rotation can be a game-changer.
SOCKS MATTER MORE THAN YOU THINK
Honestly, socks don’t get enough love in the running world—but they can make or break your run.
The best marathon running kit isn’t just about big-ticket items. A decent pair of running socks will wick sweat away, keep your feet cool, and massively reduce the chances of blisters. If you’ve had blister issues before, look at toe socks—they’re weirdly brilliant.
WHAT TO WEAR ON YOUR BOTTOM HALF
Leggings? Shorts? Capris? Honestly, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer here.
Some runners swear by lightweight shorts, others feel more confident in full-length tights. My advice? Try out a few different options during your long runs. If you’re going to find out that those new shorts ride up or those leggings slide down, better to discover that on a Sunday long run than at mile 8 on race day.
And whatever you go for—make sure there’s a pocket for gels or your phone. The best marathon running kit should support your body and your race day needs.
WHAT TO WEAR ON YOUR TOP HALF
Your top layer is where tech fabric really matters. For race day and longer training runs, you want lightweight, sweat-wicking tops that won’t cling, rub or overheat you.
Depending on the weather, you’ll be choosing between a singlet, short sleeve or long sleeve. If you’re running through winter, don’t forget you can layer up. Start with a base layer, add a long sleeve, and top it with a breathable jacket if needed.
Oh—and do a few test runs in your charity vest or race-day shirt. You’ll want to know how it feels before you’re 10 miles deep with no turning back.
DO I REALLY NEED A RUNNING JACKET?
I’m going to say it: if you can stretch your budget a little, a good running jacket is one of the best marathon running kit investments you’ll make.
Not all jackets are created equal. A full waterproof will keep you bone dry but can get sweaty. A lightweight windbreaker won’t stop a downpour but will keep you warm when it’s chilly. If you tend to overheat, go for a breathable shell. If you’re always cold (hello winter long runs), go for something insulated.
Think about your typical running conditions and choose accordingly. You don’t need five different jackets—you just need one that fits well and works with your climate.
THE BEST MARATHON RUNNING KIT: LITTLE EXTRAS THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
Once you’ve got your essentials sorted, a few extra bits can really level up your training experience:
Running belt or hydration vest – Ideal for carrying gels, keys, or your phone on long runs.
Anti-chafe balm – Trust me. If you know, you know.
Running hat or cap – For sun, rain or just to hide that post-run hair.
Gloves and headband – A must in colder months.
These might not be the stars of the show, but they’re what take your gear from basic to the best marathon running kit for you.
