I WANT TO START TRAINING FOR A MARATHON
I want to start training for a marathon…is something I never thought I’d say. I’d never been a long distance runner, sticking with 5ks and 10ks at a push. Both my brother and dad had run the London Marathon and having watched them train for weeks and then run for hours and hours, I always thought NO way. But not because I didn’t want to…there are probably few keen runners who wouldn’t want to run the London Marathon…I just didn’t think I could. I researched how long it takes to train for a marathon…and quickly put that thought back where it came from, believing it would never surface again.
The challenge of getting runners to run for charity
The rate of people taking up running is booming and every year there is an increase in people lacing up their trainers and going for a run. Naturally that means running races are popping up everywhere. The first thing most runners do is an online search for training plans. This could be ‘16 week marathon training plan’ ‘find running coaches near me’ or ‘How long does it take to train for a marathon’. These are all very common searches which show where runners are looking for support.
London Marathon Alternatives and Why!
Another year, another painful ‘you didn’t get in’ message. It’s fine, you’re part of 100,000s who are feeling the same pain. London Marathon is the bucket list race for any runner in the UK, whether you “just” run it or are one of those trying to break a Guinness World Record - remember that guy who did it in wearing a 1940s deep-sea diving suit weighing 130lb (59kg) and it took him 5 days, 8 hours, 29 minutes and 46 seconds? But don't worry, you don't need to rip up that 16 week marathon training plan just yet.
Free running training plans
Although we would always recommend getting a personalised training plan, free training plans can be an excellent tool to help you improve your running and get ready for your race.
Is it worth joining a run club?
I had always been slightly skeptical of running clubs – the pressure to have a “good” 5k time had always put me off (what even is a good 5k time? We’re always comparing ourselves to other people but running times are all relative!). PBs are great and if that’s your main focus then running clubs are a good way to push yourself and achieve those goals. But this wasn’t my main focus…so I assumed joining a run club wasn’t for me.
